Sustainable Foods Summit :
For the third consecutive year, the North American edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will be hosted in San Francisco. The 7th edition of this international series of summits will take place on 22-23rd January 2013. Focal themes of this new edition are food security & waste, marketing best-practices and new technologies.
Poor agricultural harvests are leading to another bout of food inflation, raising questions about food security. How can the food industry be more efficient and raise production yields? What role does sustainable agriculture play in improving food security? What are the environmental and social impacts of sustainable farming?
Food waste is another focus. With the global population projected to rise to 9 billion in 2050, it is argued the answer to improved food supply is not higher production levels but greater efficiency. A third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, however how can supply chains become more efficient? What can the private sector do to reduce losses / wastages? What is the role of distribution & logistics and packaging? What can be done at production and retail level? The next edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit aims to address such questions in a high-level forum.
The Sustainable Foods Summit is a series of international summits that focuses on the leading issues the food industry faces concerning sustainability and eco-labels, such as Organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ Certified, etc. The aim of the Sustainable Foods Summit is to explore new horizons for eco-labels and sustainability in the food industry by discussing key industry issues.
Program
The next edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will take place in San Francisco on 22-23rd January 2013. Like previous editions, the summit will bring together key stake-holders (food manufacturers & retailers, ingredient suppliers, industry organizations & certification agencies, investors, packaging companies, etc.) and create a forum to debate and discuss key issues in a high-level forum.
The Sustainable Foods Summit comprises four key sessions...
Session One: Sustainability Initiatives
The opening session gives an update on some of the major sustainability developments in the food industry. It begins with a keynote that highlights problems in existing food supply chains, and how sustainable production methods can provide solutions to some of these problems.
Rising food prices and their knock-on effect on food security is explained by a consultant. Another paper highlights the role of sustainable agriculture in improving food security. Examples will be given on how sustainable farming practices can improve food supply, as well as create social and economic benefits to people in developing countries.
The use of metrics to quantify and reduce environmental footprints will be discussed, supported by a case study of a large food corporation. A leading food retailer will state how it is meeting the sustainability challenge. Other papers cover sustainable sourcing of commodities and emerging eco-labels. The session adjourns with a panel discussion on sustainable agriculture and food security.
Session Two: Tackling Food Waste
This session hones in on food losses and waste. According to the FAO (United Nations), one third of food for human consumption is lost or wasted in the supply chain. In the US, wastage accounts for about 121 billion pounds of food with two-thirds going to landfills. Key speakers in this session will discuss methods to reduce food losses and waste, with particular emphasis on landfill diversion and food rescue programs.
The premier speaker will share some findings on food losses and waste, giving details on how losses occur after harvesting, during transportation & distribution, and then at the retail and consumer level. Another paper will explain the economic, environmental and social cost of food waste, most of which are hidden to consumers. Proceeding papers will discuss methods of reducing food waste and lower these associated costs.
Reducing food losses in distribution and logistics will be discussed, followed by another paper on the role of packaging in lowering waste and changing consumer behavior. An American retailer shares its experiences in implementing a waste reduction program. Another paper looks at how landfill diversion of waste can create products for new applications. At the end of the session, the panel will discuss the challenges in improving efficiency in food supply chains.
Session Three: Marketing Best-Practices
Marketing plays a key role in the food industry, especially for sustainable foods which have added-value in terms of their environmental or social aspects. This session highlights some of the best-practices in the marketing of sustainable foods.
The opening keynote highlights the challenges of marketing sustainable products to modern consumers. The first paper gives an update on the global market for eco-labeled foods: certified Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, etc. The social benefits of community supported agriculture is highlighted by a leading operator, followed by a marketing example of a company marketing food products on ethical values.
A major food retailer shares its experiences in selecting and marketing sustainable foods, giving insights into what makes certain products successful in its stores. A research house gives a detailed description of the green consumer: what motivates them to buy sustainable foods, what are their attitudes and needs? The session ends with key speakers debating the role of marketing communications.
Session Four: New Technologies
The final session discusses the impact of new technologies on the sustainable development of the food industry. The premier speaker highlights the growing importance of mobile devices to meet the informational needs of consumers, specifically how this development is improving transparency and awareness of sustainability.
A featured speaker explores the implications of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social media on consumer behavior towards food products. How can this new tool be used in conjunction with existing marketing communications? Another paper discusses the successful deployment of e-taling; although most companies have experimented with online sales, few have achieved continued success.
The use of analytical tools to authenticate food products in terms of origins, composition and production methods is discussed. Other papers cover traceability and satellite communications, and innovations in food & beverage packaging.

National Sweater day - February 7
- February 7th, 2013 is the date for National Sweater Day. But it’s never too early to start thinking about how you can rally friends, family and colleagues to turn down the heat and put on a sweater!
Last February, over a million people across Canada turned down the heat and put on a sweater to show support for taking action on climate change. If all Canadians had lowered their thermostats by just 2 degrees Celsius, it would have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 4 to 5 megatons – equivalent to a shutting down a 600 megawatt coal-fired power station – while helping families save 9 to 12% on their energy bills.

Organic Cuba Tours - February 4-18, 2013
-
Canadian farmers, gardeners, permaculture practitioners, people involved in food security work, and the “Cuba-curious” will be interested in this Organic Cuba Tour—an alternative experience focusing on face-to-face encounters with the people at the forefront of Cuba’s agro-ecological movement.
-
Ron Berezan has now lead 12 travel programs to Cuba providing Canadian farmers, gardeners, permaculture practioners, people involved in food security work, and the “Cuba-curious” an alternative travel experience focusing on face to face encounters with people at the forefront of Cuba’s agro-ecological movement. These tours are a far cry from the “all-inclusive beach resort” experience that most Canadian travellers have in Cuba. Through carefully cultivated relationships with organizations like the Cuban Association of Agricultural Technicians and Foresters (ACTAF) and the Antonio Nunez Jiminez Foundation for Nature and Man (FANJ).
Canadian participants on these tours have a unique opportunity to hear the stories of visionary Cuban farmers and to enter into intimate dialogue with them. Our travels take us throughout the countryside visiting ecological farms, cooperatives, and research centres and into the heart of major Cuban cities where the urban agriculture and permaculture movements thrive. Unlike many group travel arrangements, these tours undertake an “experiential education” methodology whereby participants are invited into a process of discovery and integration of all that they encounter. Not only is there ample opportunity for dialogue and reflection with our Cuban friends and colleagues, but the tour participants themselves form a learning community which further enriches their experience.
Ron Berezan is joined in the leadership of these tours by other Canadian and Cuban colleagues, including Fernando Funes, one of the key founders and visionaries of the agro-ecological movement in Cuba. Spanish language translation is provided throughout the tour by Ron and others. Accommodation ranges from guest houses to comfortable but modest hotels. Opportunities to enjoy Cuba’s incredible cultural life and natural beauty are integrated into the program itinerary. Many Canadian participants have been able secure funding sources to underwrite the cost of their participation in the program or have been able to include the cost of the trip as a business expense on their income tax returns.

"Energy efficiency and renovation of existing buildings in Bulgaria. Priorities 2014-2020 "
Energy Efficiency in Action
Buildings are responsible for over one third of the energy consumption and about 40 percent of global emissions of CO2. This is the sector with the greatest potential for energy savings.
In Bulgaria, energy efficiency is still the most important topic, households and businesses consume many times more electricity in Europe. So in the coming decades should make joint efforts to make our economy, our cities and buildings more energy efficient.
In Bulgaria for energy refurbishment need 18.3 million square meters of public buildings, which in financial terms means about 1.2 billion lev
Seven times more funds needed for renovation of 80,000 residential buildings with 700,000 homes (approximately 53.6 million square meters area) where over 2 million people. According to real data collected during the implementation of the demonstration project of UNDP and the Ministry, the package of measures renovation cost approximately 150 lev. / Sq. m of living space. Based on this value the total investment required can be estimated at 8 billion lev energy savings resulting from the renovation of housing, account for an estimated 40-60% of the total consumption before the intervention.
The legal framework for energy efficiency is extremely dynamic, both in the EU and the country. We are amended in accordance with EEA requirements of Directive 2010/31/EU. The number of buildings whose condition should be monitored and improved significantly increases as the threshold for compulsory certification is reduced from 1000 square meters to 500 square meters This means a significant expansion of the construction sector with a diversity of activities and it sectors that serve it (design, manufacture, installation, inspection, etc.)..
Top priority in regional development in the period 2014 - 2020, will be energy efficiency in residential and public buildings. Measures in this area will be combined with the renovation and improvement of the surrounding urban environment. We will increase the use of financial engineering instruments.
